September 13 - Francis Scott Key writes "The Star Spangled Banner" as the British shell Ft. McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland.
September 21 - "The Star Spangled Banner" is published as a poem in the Baltimore American.
November 26 - A British fleet leaves Jamaica to attack New Orleans in order to gain control of the Mississippi River.
December 14 - The Treaty of Ghent between the U.S. and Great Britain ends the War of 1812.
